Several Poplar Bluff organizations teamed up Friday morning to plant three trees on Harper Street in celebration of Arbor Day.

The Poplar Bluff Tree Advisory Board, the Poplar Bluff Parks & Recreation Department, the Poplar Bluff Garden Club and FosterAdopt Connect planted two redbuds and one dogwood on city property on West Harper Street across from the entrance to Bacon Park.

The event was a celebration of Arbor Day, organized by Murray Hammond, the horticulturist for the Poplar Bluff Parks & Recreation Department, the Poplar Bluff Tree Advisory Board and the Poplar Bluff Garden Club. Several children who were part of FosterAdopt Connect joined the celebration and assisted Hobbs Nursery in planting the trees.

Poplar Bluff Mayor Robert Smith also read a proclamation from the city recognizing Arbor Day.

“Our primary goal has been to educate the public in the value of trees and promote proper maintenance and planting of trees in a city named for the tulip tree, or yellow poplar, one of North America’s most magnificent trees,” said John Stanard, who is a member of the Poplar Bluff Tree Advisory Board.
