The Butler County Eastern District commission seat will remain unchanged heading into the next four-year term.

Current Commissioner and Republican Butch Anderson won his reelection bid against Van Rhodes, an Independent.

Anderson received 8,638 of the 11,435 votes cast while Rhodes received 2,797 votes.

In 2016, when the two also faced off against each other, Anderson received 7,926 votes to Rhodes’ 3,423 votes.

Rhodes said he was surprised by how this election went because when talking to voters it seemed like things were going his way.

“They probably voted straight Republican here in this county,” he said. “That’s what they did, because they were all voting for Trump. So, they just went straight down the line.”

Anderson said he’d like to thank those who supported him during the campaign and he’s looking forward to another four years in the position.

“There’s some unfinished jobs that I haven’t got done,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed working with the public and I want to continue it.”

This year, he said, it was encouraging to see a different group of people getting more involved in elections.

“I’ve seen a tremendous amount of young people out and that’s good to see,” Anderson said. “Our younger generation is getting more interested in politics.”

This will be Anderson’s fourth term as commissioner.
