Filing for Butler County and statewide offices for the Aug. 4 primary election ended at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and 12 of them include multiple candidates.

Races for three county offices from Butler County will be contested, according to county clerk Tonyi Deffendall, as will three township primaries and one Poplar Bluff position.

Three state senate districts and two state house districts will be contested.

In Butler County, incumbent Butch Anderson will face Ross DeGaris for eastern district commissioner, incumbent Andy Moore will face his predecessor Jim Akers for coroner, and incumbent Sharron Payne will face Cheryl Baker, Marjorie Shipman and Jeffrey Darnell for public administrator. All six candidates are Republicans. No Democrats filed for any county office.

Among Butler County townships, Republicans Chad Parks and Sharron Payne will meet in Epps, Republicans Joe Leahy and Cindi Bowman will meet in Beaver and Republicans Debby Lundstrom and Scott Lundstrom will meet in Oak Grove.

In Poplar Bluff’s Ward 5, Democrats Robert Smith and Diane Smith will square off for the seat.

Each county office holder serves four-year terms. All county winners will take office Jan. 1, except for the assessor who will be sworn in Sept. 1, 2021.

In state senate races, three Republicans — Kent Scism of Farmington, Joshua Barrett of Fredericktown and Elaine Freeman Gannon of DeSoto — have filed in District 3.

Four Republicans — Jason Bean of Holcomb, Eddy Justice of Poplar Bluff, Jeff Shawan of Poplar Bluff and Stephen Carroll Cookson of Poplar Bluff — are running for the District 25 seat. Two Republicans — Holly Rehder of Scott City and Kathy Swan of Cape Girardeau — will vie for the Republican nomination in District 27.

In District 33, Karla Eslinger of Wasola, Van Kelly of Norwood and Robert Ross of Eunice are facing each other in the Republican primary.

In the state house, Andrew McDaniel of Deering, and Jeff McCormick of Kennett, have filed for District 150. Three Republicans — Jack “Skip” Johnson of Gatewood; Darrell Atchison of Williamsville, and Larry Kimbrow of Poplar Bluff — have filed for District 153.

Winners in the August primary advance to the general election scheduled for Nov. 3.

Three people have filed for the U.S. House of Representative race in District 8, including incumbent Republican Jason Smith of Cape Girardeau, Democrat Kathy Ellis of Festus and Libertarian Tom Schmitz of Rolla.
