Melvin Gene Childress, 76, of Poplar Bluff passed away peacefully on Friday morning, Jan. 31, 2020, at home.
He was born in Holcomb, Mo., Oct. 8, 1943, to Henry and Margie Childress. As a self-taught musician, he enjoyed singing and music, playing multiple instruments, although he played guitar most often. Singing and music filled his house as a regular past-time, and he fostered his love of singing and music to his children. He made many life-long friends playing country music with them in local establishments. Later, he transitioned to writing and playing gospel music.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Carolyn and Margaret; and daughter, Theresa.
As one of seven children, he left behind his sister, Oneida Harding; ex-wife and caregiver, Lori Childress; four children, Sandra, Mikel, Melissa and Jason; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and his dear friend Gerald Cook.
His memorial service will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at First Assembly of God (Bluff First), 2518 Barron Road, Poplar Bluff, Missouri. 63901.
