City firefighters responded at 6:08 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, to a vehicle fire in the 800 block of Cherry Street.

According to the report, firefighters found a 2001 Pontiac Bonneville, owned by Thomas Braden, burning at 833 Cherry St. Heavy flames reportedly were coming from the car’s engine compartment and underneath it.

Firefighters used 100 gallons of water to put out the fire and disconnected the battery.

Braden told firefighters he had started the car and was letting it warm up due to the cold conditions when flames started coming from under the hood.

City firefighters responded at 5:34 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, to a report of a fuel pump malfunctioning and spilled fueling at Huck’s Food Store, 703 N. Westwood Blvd.

According to the report, firefighters used an absorbent to soak up the spill, and the area was closed off until the fumes dissipated.

City firefighters responded at 4:18 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, to a report of smoke at the 945 Lester St. residence occupied by Jason Brock and owned by Victor Medna.

According to the report, firefighters found an unauthorized burn. A man reportedly had been cleaning the property and had some unapproved materials burning.

The man put out the fire upon the request of the fire department.

City firefighters responded at 12:42 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, to a report of a strong odor of gas inside the 920 Butler St. residence occupied by Jeffrey Lane and owned by West Properties.

According to the report, firefighters could smell natural gas from the road and request Spire employees respond.

Firefighters used a multigas meter to check the residence, but nothing was detected.

Spire employee(s) found a small leak around the lower fitting on the meter, but did not detect any readings inside the home.

The scene was turned over to the gas company.
