Poplar Bluff city firefighters responded to 827 Poplar Street at 10:54 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, to reports of a building fire.
According to the report, when they arrived, firefighters found heavy fire and smoke coming from a home.
As a firefighter was attempting to break in the back door, occupant Steven Moore, 29, "came crashing" through an exterior window. After saying there was nobody else in the house, he reportedly ran and was detained several blocks away before being transported to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for injuries related to jumping through the window. The report cites concern of possible drugs involved.
Firefighters later found out when the fire started there was another occupant, Juanita Williams, in a downstairs basement. According to the report, she left the residence when she smelled smoke and heard the fire department responded.
Firefighters used approximately 1,000 gallons of water to put out the fire along with a PPV fan to remove the smoke. The gas to the meter was turned off by firefighters.
According to the report, it appeared the fire started on an exterior balcony, although the cause of the ignition is unknown. The fire was contained to the building of origin. The state fire investigator responded to the scene and the investigation is on going.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 3:29 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21
