Wayne County officials say a man has died from injuries received early Sunday in a workplace accident.
Michael Johnson, 54, of the Greenville area died Sunday in a Cape Girardeau hospital, said Wayne County Coroner Gary Umfleet.
Umfleet said next of kin had been notified, but other details about the incident could not be released until hospital records and other information was reviewed.
Johnson was an employee of Kerry Ingredients, which produces liquid smoke products from locally-sourced hardwood sawdust.
The man was injured in a fall from a roof at the plant, and taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital before being transported to Cape Girardeau, according to officials.
A structure fire was reported at the plant, with Greenville Volunteer Fire Department responding at 1:21 a.m., fire department representatives said.
Kerry has employed about 30 workers in recent years.
A message left at the company early Monday afternoon had not been returned as of press time.
In 2016, the company announced a $14.3 million expansion at the facility. This included the addition of approximately 20,650 square feet to house sawdust receiving and storage, production equipment, and additional office and conference space.
Kerry is owned by Kerry Group PLC, an Ireland-based food ingredients company with 24,000 employees and more than 100 manufacturing locations worldwide.
