PIGGOTT, Ark. — A Poplar Bluff man considered to be a person of interest in a fatal hit-and-run crash earlier this month has been arrested in Arkansas.

“Zack Davis was arrested on the Probation/Parole warrant in Piggott” early Tuesday morning, said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Clark Parrott. “He is being held in the Clay County Detention Center” in Piggott.

Parrott had no further information regarding Davis’ arrest and calls to the Piggott Police Department seeking that information were not returned.

According to Clay County detention center personnel, Davis is being held on an “investigative hold” and can be held there for up to 72 hours.

Davis, the staff member said, can’t be released to Missouri “until Arkansas clears him.”

Davis reportedly was being interviewed by “state police investigators” Tuesday afternoon.

If Davis is “formally charged” in Arkansas, then a probable-cause hearing may be held on Wednesday. It is unknown at this time what charges Davis could face there.

Should Davis not be charged, the staff member said, officials will contact Butler County regarding whether to release him or make arrangements for him to be picked up.

Authorities have been looking for Davis for about two weeks. He was wanted for questioning regarding a crash that occurred at about 7:40 p.m. Feb. 4 on Highway 53, about three miles south of Poplar Bluff, and left Wendy L. Dumas, 23, dead.

Video surveillance from a local business close to the crash scene was reviewed, and Davis was identified as a person of interest, Parrott earlier said.

The preliminary investigation and evidence at the scene “indicates (Dumas) was walking on the southbound shoulder and was struck by a northbound, white 1999 Oldsmobile Alero,” said Parrott.

Dumas, according to earlier reports, was taken by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m. by a doctor there.

During the ensuring investigation, Parrott said, Davis’ car was found within a short time after the crash.

At this time, Davis reportedly is wanted on a parole violation warrant, having pleaded guilty to the Class C felony of possession of a controlled substance through Butler County. He was sentenced to five years in the Missouri Department in October 2016 after being found in violation of his probation.
