PIEDMONT, Mo. -- Carl Hughes, 89, of Poplar Bluff, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018 at Evelyn's House in Creve Coeur, Mo.

Carl was born Jan. 15, 1929 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Hoyt and Viola Hughes. On May 28, 1950, Carl was united in marriage to Mary Ann Housewright, who preceded him in death Feb. 1, 1998.

Carl is a member of First Baptist Church in Piedmont. He served as a deacon in the church for many years.

Surviving in the family is one daughter, Carla (Richard) McAllister, of Piedmont, and two sons, Mikel (Cheryl) Hughes, of Poplar Bluff, and Larry Hughes, of Rolla, Mo.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Leslie Collier, LeeAnn (Derek) Weyand, Robin (Bryan) Raddatz, Jason McAllister, Mitch (Alexa) Hughes, Ashley (Greg) Clark, Brett (Annie) McCauley and Lawson Hughes. Also surviving are 15 great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Nathan and Lauren Collier, Russell, Evelynn, Lily and Haley Weyand, Todd, McKenzie and Travis Raddatz, Dakota Moss, Kensington Clark, Karsten and Kinley McCauley, and Isabella Hughes.

Out of the 14 children in Carl's family, surviving are three brothers, Paul, Art and Joe Hughes, and three sisters, Fern Powers, Barbara Palmer and Gloria Cavanaugh. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Carl in death are his parents, four brothers, Ed, Ervin, Bernie and Jim Hughes, and three sisters, Bonnie, Patsy and Harriet.

Corporal Hughes proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War.

Carl worked for Brown Shoe Company in Piedmont for 25 years, after which he built one of the first car washes named Carl's Car Wash in 1965. In 1970, he purchased Holiday Ice Company and changed the name to Piedmont Ice Company. He operated in Piedmont until 1981 when he moved the operation to Poplar Bluff and renamed it Bluff City Ice, which operated as a family owned business for 45 years. He received a prestigious award during this time, The Missouri Valley Ice Association Lifetime Achievement Award, for all his contributions to the Ice Industry.

Carl was also a member of the Poplar Bluff Elks Lodge, the V.F.W., American Legion, Missouri Valley Ice Association, and the International Packaged Ice Association for many years.

Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 at Victory Baptist Temple in Piedmont. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church with Pastor Carlos Jeffries of Poplar Bluff and Rev. Kevin Kinnard of Piedmont officiating. Serving as Pall Bearers are Brett McCauley, Lawson Hughes, Dakota Moss, Todd Raddatz, Travis Raddatz, Nathan Collier, Mitch Hughes, Russell Weyand and Jason McAllister.

Burial with full Military Honors will be in Masonic Cemetery in Piedmont. Memorials have been requested to Evelyn's House Hospice and may be sent in care of Morrison-Worley Funeral Chapel in Piedmont. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.morrisonworleychapel.com
