A home loss to Northwestern was bad enough, but Purdue's high expectations for 2018 were further dulled with Saturday's home loss to Eastern Michigan, a school that just a few years ago staved off campus support to shut down the football program. Purdue, 0-2 for the first time since 1996, fell to the Mid-American Conference program 20-19 despite producing two 100-yard rushers on offense and six sacks on defense. Penalties have been a major problem under second-year coach Jeff Brohm, who last year guided Purdue to a 7-6 record and its first bowl game since 2013. The Boilermakers have committed 16 penalties for 180 lost yards in two games, including Saturday's fatal personal foul on linebacker Cornel Jones after a third-down sack. Later in the drive, EMU kicked the game-winning field goal. Through two weeks Purdue is last in the Big Ten in total defense, allowing 408.5 yards per game, and last in turnover margin at minus-4.
