From Staff Reports

Plans are underway for the 30th Annual Haven House Trail Ride, scheduled for Sept. 22.

Ted and Cindy Evans will once again host the shelter's biggest fundraiser, according to organizers.

This year's major sponsors include Missouri Foundation for Health, Lisa Reynolds Insurance Agency and Dr. Lance Yeoman.

Riders collect pre-paid pledges from family, friends and businesses to compete for great prizes. The top three prizes will be a Circle Y Flex Lite Western Saddle valued at $1,695, and donated by J & L Tack and the Haven House board of directors; a $1,000 VISA gift card, compliments of Dr. Yeoman's Dermatology and Rejuv Esthetics; and a $1,000 gift certificate to Gray Farm and Feed, offered by Gray and Dr. Matthew and Suzanne Riffle.

The first three finishers will be determined by the total of pre-paid pledges presented at registration, and the selection of prizes will be based on their finishing order.

Participation in the 10-mile trail ride is free, with a continental breakfast, a barbecue lunch provided by Jerry Hillis, and lunch time entertainment by Iron Mountain Railroad Station. As usual, all riders who register with a minimum of $25 in pledges will also receive a commemorative T-shirt, and will be eligible to win an array of door prizes donated by local businesses.

"We wanted this 30th annual trail ride to be something special," reported Maryrose Stricker, event chairperson, "so we have added a few bigger prizes for the riders, as well as a special anniversary backdrop for photo opportunities for riders with their horses, or groups of friends."

Stricker added along with the sponsors listed, the Haven House board is grateful to all the local businesses that contribute toward the success of the event, including Butler County EMS and The Camp who provided funding for printing costs for this year's ride.

Dr. Donna Almond and Fishin' Pig are sponsoring a raffle to benefit the trail ride. The 11-piece Yeti Cooler Package, valued at $600, includes a soft side cooler and several varieties of cooler cups. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased from any board member or at select businesses around Poplar Bluff.

According to Mary Ann Allen, Haven House executive director, all proceeds will go toward the costs of sheltering women and children left homeless due to domestic or sexual violence.

"Right now, virtually every bed is full," reported Allen, who supervises a staff of 12, who provide around the clock management of the shelter and emergency hotline and advocacy for survivors. "This is the most rewarding work any of us can do, and a big part of that is knowing that the community supports us so well."
