On Thursday night, the Poplar Bluff High School held a free physical night, providing physicals for students ranging from seventh to 12th grade.

The physicals were administered for students ahead of the fall sports season. Practices for fall high school sports begins August 6, while junior high practices start August 13.

MSHSAA requires students to have an up-to-date physical on file and students are required to have a current physical, an Insurance Information & Parent Consent Form on file in the athletic offices before participating in tryouts or practice.

Physicals are recommended yearly to help determine the general status of a person's health. It includes tests for possible diseases, update immunizations and ensure that a healthy diet and exercise routine are in place.

The free clinic provides a critical need to students who otherwise may not be able to afford a physical. Without health insurance, an annual physical can cost anywhere from $50 to $200.

In instances where students do not pass the physical at the clinic, they are "referred to their health care provider for further examination," said Karen McDaniel, a nurse working the clinic.

In past years, the clinic has examined anywhere from 300-350 students. Physicians and nurses from Physicians Park and Kneibert Clinic volunteered to administer the examinations.

"We do it to be a part of the community, we love to help," McDaniel said.
