Investigators with the Butler County Sheriff's Department learned earlier this week that the bones recovered in November from a drained lake are that of Edward Acie Goodwin.

Goodwin was reported missing on July 5, 2015, by his mother, Connie Goodwin. Investigators have verified the 32-year-old was last seen on June 29, 2015.

Eyewitness accounts, according to earlier reports, allege Rickey Hurt shot Goodwin at least one time and disposed of his body in a private-property lake, located off County Road 572. The lake is located about one-half mile north of Hurt's residence on County Road 552.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs earlier reported that area was Goodwin's last known location.

Partial skeletal remains were found in that lake in early November when Butler County officials executed a search warrant there and used heavy equipment and pumps to drain it.

Dr. Russell Deidiker subsequently determined the remains were that of a male, less than 40 years old, with a height range of 5-feet, 6-inches to 5-feet, 10-inches.

At the time Goodwin was reported missing, he was 32 and described as being 5-feet, 6-inches tall.

The remains subsequently were sent to UNT Health Science Center for Human Identification in Fort Worth, Texas.

On Tuesday, Butler County Investigator Kellis Thompson received information from the center regarding its analysis for the bones.

Human DNA, Thompson wrote in his report, was extracted from a section of a left femur in February and then analyzed, as were what was described as family reference samples.

A report from the center, Thompson said, says the genetic data obtained from the left femur and the family samples "are consistent with the unidentified human remains originating from a biological child of Clarence Edward Goodwin and Connie Lucille Goodwin."

The report, he said, further says the genetic data are "approximately 81.3 quadrillion times more likely" to be that of Edward Goodwin as opposed to the remains originating from an unrelated individual.

Butler County Coroner Andy Moore confirmed "those are the remains of Edward Goodwin" this morning.

Hurt, according to earlier reports, was charged with the Class A felony of first-degree murder shortly after the remains were found.

Having been granted a change of venue in his case, the 31-year-old is to stand trial Nov. 14-16 in Wayne County on the charge.
