Mary Helen Mays, 83, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018 in Poplar Bluff.

Helen, the daughter of the late Roscoe and Flora Griffith White, was born Feb. 10, 1935 in Chaonia, Mo. She was a homemaker and attended Faith Baptist Church. In her earlier years Helen worked at Buseman Fuse in St. Louis and Florsheim Shoe Company in Poplar Bluff but older folks may remember her from the Jones Restaurant and Skating Rink in Puxico. Helen was a hard worker who never gave up on any task and never asked for anything in return. She enjoyed spending time with her family, going to Branson and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball and watching old movies especially westerns such as Gunsmoke and Bonanza. The moments she cherished most were the times she spent with her husband.

She was married to her husband, James B. Mays in Joliet, Ill. on Sept. 8, 1974. He survives.

Other survivors include her son, Dennis Jones of Puxico, Mo.; three sisters Wanda Jennewein of Hillsboro, Virginia Samples of St. Louis, Verna Green of Silva and JoAnn Million of Williamsville; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Roy White, a sister Betty McCullumn and a step-son, Samuel Mays also preceded Helen in death.

Visitation was from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. A graveside service and burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the City Cemetery with Rev. Mickey Green officiating and Rev Matt Stahlman assisting.

Cotrell Funeral Service of Poplar Bluff, Mo. is honored to serve the family of Mary Helen Mays; please visit www.cotrellfuneralservice.com to share memories or to leave a condolence message.
