The weather outside may not be frightful but it sure is cold with frigid temperatures expected to continue through the week producing wind chills at 10 below zero and potential snow flurries today.

Butler County Emergency Management Director Robbie Myers said to use caution and common sense until temperatures rise.

"Don't be outdoors unless you absolutely have to be, especially if you have a health condition," Myers said.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky., the extended six-day forecast for Southeast Missouri shows a high of 36 degrees occurring on Friday, followed by a low of 10 on Sunday.

Tuesday's flurries or showers may produce very minor snow accumulations, generally considered a dusting, according to the weather service. Light winds and cold air will produce wind chills ranging from 5 below zero to 5 above late tonight.

Snow is not expected Wednesday through Monday, but very cold air will remain in the region during this period. On New Year's morning, wind chills are expected to range from zero to 10 degrees below zero.

The high New Year's Day is projected to only rise to 23 degrees.

Myers said it is important during times of extreme weather to check on elderly folks from time to time. He said anyone who is not equipped to face the cold temperatures at home can visit one of the various warming centers located throughout the region. Friday is the only day this week with a projected high above freezing.

Warming centers by city: in Poplar Bluff, the Butler County Health Dept., located at 1619 N. Main Street; in Qulin, Mo., the Qulin Community Senior Citizens Center at 485 D Street; in Williamsville, Mo., the Williamsville Senior Center located east of the intersection of Highway 49 and Williamsville; in Puxico, the Puxico Oaks Senior Center at 335 N. Harty Street; and in Carter County, the East Carter Senior Center at 20 Noble Street in Ellsinore, Mo.
