BROSELEY -- Down 15 with 10 1/2 minutes remaining Friday night, Twin Rivers rallied to finish third in the Lady Royals Christmas Classic.

The host Royals put together a 30-8 run to end the game to stun Chaffee 48-41.

"We just really worked aggressive pressure (defense)," Twin Rivers coach Kelly Westerfield said of the comeback.

Twin Rivers (7-5) forced 14 turnovers during the comeback and limited the Red Devils to four field goals.

Katelyn South scored 23 points to lead the Royals while Catey Hester added 13 and led with 10 rebounds. The pair were later named to the all-tournament team.

Chaffee's Katie Glueck, also named to the all-tournament team, scored 10 points along with Kylie Wilhite.

The Red Devils were in control for 2 1/2 quarters, holding Twin Rivers to just 18 points with their 1-3-1 zone defense.

"We weren't making that defense work very hard," Westerfield said. "They could just stand there and be big."

Westerfield kept telling her team to go faster on offense.

"I wanted them to cut into the gaps quicker and were kind of jogging through them because they feel like it's not open so then they don't want to go, and we don't get the ball reverse side to side quick enough," Westerfield added.

The Royals got going with their defense after Glueck's three-point play with 2:27 left in the third quarter put Chaffee up 33-18.

South got a steal leading to free throws then forced another turnover to set up Hester's layin. Hester got a steal as the Royals pressed, later leading to her putback off a missed 3 to cut the deficit to single digits for the first time since the second quarter.

Chaffee's Gracie Knutson scored in the post but Emmy Roberts later scored and South got a steal and layin in the closing seconds of the quarter to pull the Royals within 35-28.

Roberts scored seven points off the bench, all in the second half.

"I have to give a lot of credit to Emmy Roberts," Westerfield said. "She came in, hit some big buckets for us so that they had to adjust their defense so they couldn't swing off people and double up on South.

"It gave us some momentum and we got to set up our pressure and really get after it."

Roberts hit a 3-pointer with just under fourth minutes remaining to cut Chaffee's lead to 39-38. Hester then got a steal and sank a 14 footer for the Royals first lead with 3:41 left.

Abbey Hester's steal later led to a pair of free throw by South and Roberts scored off a pass from Katie Deken with 1:49 to go for a 44-39 lead.

Chaffee finally ended a scoring drought of 3 minutes, 27 seconds when Glueck scored in the paint to cut the Twin Rivers to lead three, but missed a foul shot for the three-point play. Chaffee, however, came away with the rebound and the Royals sent Knutson to the line where the junior missed both shots. Again the Red Devils got the rebound and again they missed, this time a shot from the field that South rebounded.

With the Royals still up 44-41, the teams traded turnovers before Catey Hester knocked down both ends of a one-and-one with 20 seconds left. Abbey Hester got a steal to close out the win.

It was the best finish for the host since taking third in 2013. The Royals, who won the consolation title last year, had lost their previous two appearances in the third-place game.

CONSOLATION FINAL

Conner Watkins claimed the tournament scoring title with a 28-point performance Friday as Charleston beat Portageville 62-54.

The teams were tied at 43 entering the fourth quarter when Watkins scored 11 points, matching the scoring by the Bulldogs.

Portageville, which led 20-15 after one quarter, was led by Dasmine Johnson's 18 points and 14 by Shaymia Roston.
