The Doniphan R-I school board approved a motion petitioning for the district to change athletic conferences from the Ozark Foothills Conference to the Bootheel Conference.
The move will require a vote of the Bootheel Conference schools, possibly coming as early as November, according to the Prospect-News.
First-year athletic director Jeremy Stout recommended changing conferences at a Sept. 19 board meeting in an effort to better prepare teams for district tournaments.
Doniphan, which has been a member of the OFC since 1982, is the largest school in the OFC and also would be the largest in the Bootheel Conference with its enrollment of about 450 students at the Senior High School level.
Members of the Bootheel Conference include Hayti, Caruthersville, Portageville, Senath-Hornersville, Malden, South Pemiscot and Campbell.
