Day use areas and a new overlook at Greenville Recreation Area are expected to be open by Saturday morning, just in time for an annual celebration of local heritage.

The 26th Old Greenville Days will be held Saturday and Sunday featuring craft booths, entertainment, a living history encampment and children's activities.

Activities will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The event is free to attend and is held by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in conjunction with the Wayne County Historical Society.

The Greenville Recreation Area has been closed since a severe windstorm Memorial Day weekend, which brought down more than 100 trees.

A Memory Lane trail will remain closed because of fallen trees, said project manager Cindy Jackson. Campsites are also closed until summer 2018 while electric, water and road upgrades are being made.

Approximately $1 million in repairs and upgrades are underway, the Corps has said.

Crews were still working on electric and water service for the day use bathrooms as of early this week, Jackson said. Weather will play a role in how quickly the work proceeds, she said.

Shade in the day use area will also be limited this year because of the number of trees that were damaged, Jackson said.

In addition to the day use area, a bike trail between the recreation area and the city of Greenville will be open, with some restrictions if rain is seen throughout the week, she explained.

The bike trail also extends to a new overlook above Highway 67, but this area will only be accessible from Highway FF. A steep section of the trail off Highway 67 will need safety fencing before it is used, Jackson said.

The boat ramp and a vault toilet at that location are open, she said.
