CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- A Puxico, Mo., man was sentenced to five years in federal prison Tuesday morning for illegally possessing a firearm.

Dennis James Trout, 51, was sentenced to 60 months on one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm by U.S. District Judge Stephen Limbaugh Jr., Assistant U.S. Attorney Keith Sorrell said.

Limbaugh, Sorrell said, ordered Trout's sentence to be served consecutive to any other sentences he has.

Trout, according to entries on Casenet, had his probation revoked on May 4, 2016, on a Class D felony of non-support and was sentenced to four years in the Missouri Department of Corrections. The execution of Trout's sentence was suspended, and he was placed on five years' supervised probation at that time.

Sorrell said Trout will be placed on a two-year period of supervised released upon his release from federal prison.

With his May plea, Trout admitted on May 25, 2016, he possessed a 12-gauge shotgun, which was sold to a confidential informant working for the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

As a convicted felon, Trout was prohibited from possessing firearms.

Trout previously had been convicted of the felony of delivery of a controlled substance in 2006 and distribution of a controlled substance to a minor in 2007. Both convictions, as well as his non-support conviction, were in Stoddard County.
