COLUMBIA, Mo. - Poplar Bluff High School students attended the Emerging Leaders Conference June 25-27 at the University of Missouri and the Missouri State Capitol.
The Poplar Bluff High School participants were: Laneshia Combs, Daryl Vaughn II and Adrian Webb. Participants from Missouri and neighboring states learned about several pieces of legislation and had the opportunity to debate the policies on the Capitol floor. The students worked closely with university administrators, professors, students and state legislators throughout the program.
The Emerging Leaders Conference was co-sponsored by the University of Missouri's Division of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity and the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus Foundation.
"Students had the opportunity to debate legislation, as well as an opportunity to further develop leadership skills," said Rhodesia McMillian, associate director in the MU Office of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity. "Because of this experience, students felt more knowledgeable about the legislative process and were encouraged to pay close attention to the issues. The Division of Inclusion, Diversity & Equity looks forward to working with the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. to continue providing this experience to students."
McMillian serves as the associate director of K-12 access, programming, and engagement for the Office of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity.
