The FEMA Hazard Mitigation Community Education and Outreach will be at PACK'S Do It Center, 918 S Westwood Blvd., Poplar Bluff, Mo. from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday and from 7 a.m. to noon Tuesday.
The FEMA team will provide information about rebuilding stronger and reducing future damage, disaster preparedness and flood insurance with guidance on where to get additional information of help. Hazard mitigation advice will depend on the individual's situation and interests and covers a wide range of subjects, including clean up, sump pumps, foundation drainage systems, sewer back-flow valves, floor drain plugs, water resistant materials, such as closed cell insulation, the use of corrosion resistant fasteners, like galvanized screws or nails, and metal and vinyl windows and doors instead of wood.
Because tornadoes and wind damage are also a common risks across the area, the group also discusses the installation of storm shelters, the use of metal connectors to reinforce a continuous load path from the roof to the foundation, and wind resistant building materials. They can also answer questions abut earthquake mitigation.
FEMA will provide information about registering for disaster assistance. Registration ends Aug. 14.
