One hundred and ninety-five years ago the Fourth of July marked a momentous event in the history of the world--a new nation was born on the American continent. Conceived in liberty, deriving its basic concepts of freedom from the Biblical concept that sman is made in the image of his creator and derives his dignity from the fact he was made free. Are we losing our appreciation of the forces and ideals that formed our history? We have been proud to be called a "nation under God." "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord," says the Bible. Psalms 33:12. It also says, "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all nations that forget God." Psalms 9:17. Will we become so obsessed with the abuse and misuse of our freedom that we will lose our sense of responsibility to God that had characterized our history? Surely we must be aware that the present is tomorrow's history which shall effect our children and grandchildren. Shall we permit subversive elements and radical activists to destroy our faith in our past history that they may manipulate present and future history? God forbid! Yet it is being done. A Patrick Henry who could say, "Is life so dear or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery," is called, by them, a fool. We are part of history. A people called into nationhood to glorify God and live with dignity as free men. It is a glorious heritage. Let's appreciate it and preserve it.
