In the wake of major flooding, several area schools have closed their doors until the end of the week per a Tuesday morning decision.

Poplar Bluff R-1, Twin Rivers R-X and Three Rivers College all made the call at about 11:30 a.m. to remain closed for the rest of the week. However, Neelyville R-IV Superintendent Brad Hagood said he is taking things day by day.

"Everyone should keep an eye on local news media and look for the automated phone call for any updates on school closings," Hagood said.

As of press time, Hagood had not yet reached a decision regarding Thursday's classes. Keeping an eye on road closures and as things reopen, checking the conditions with bussing and transportation in mind are his top priorities, Hagood continued. He also said that any changes to the last day of school at Neelyville will be discussed at a later date.

Poplar Bluff R-1 Superintendent Scott Dill said he anticipates Poplar Bluff resuming as normal Monday morning.

"If anything changes and we feel the situation becomes unsafe, we will proceed accordingly," Dill said.

Dill said Poplar Bluff's last day of school is holding strong at May 26 and will not change.

"We will get everything accomplished. We'll get all our tests taken and get our seniors graduated and finish out the school year on time," he said.

Twin Rivers R-X Superintendent Jeremy Siebert said the seniors are continuing with commencement activities this week, including the Baccalaureate Ceremony tonight at 7 p.m. in the high school gym. Graduation will still be held at 3 p.m. Sunday.

"Unless things take a significant turn for the worse this weekend, graduation will not change," he said.

Siebert said he hopes the rest of the student body is able to return to classes Monday, but is unsure how realistic that hope is.

"I know in the past it has taken a couple weeks to get back on track. Hopefully we're able to reopen as soon as possible and I'm hoping to keep our last day of school as May 16," Siebert said.

Sacred Heart Catholic School is back in session today after closing Monday and Tuesday, while Westwood Baptist Academy has stayed open all week.
