The not-so-little Mule
The Poplar Bluff Museum tells many unknown tales of our community. I want to tell you some of those hidden tales found within the museum walls.
The only thing little about Brent Little is his name. He was an All-Star at Poplar Bluff High School. Brent was a two-time champion in the long jump, and a six-time All-State jumper. He set the record in the long jump and the triple jump.
When the football coach Mark Barousse saw how fast and agile Brent was, he tried to recruit him for Mules football. Brent told him “I just want to play basketball.” But the coach had a trick up his sleeve. With a box of glazed donuts and some smooth talking, he convinced him to play. The coach knew a track star would make a perfect wide receiver.
The donuts paid off. Brent was selected for the 2001 All-Star football team and twice for the All-SEMO football team. He set records for most receiving yards in a single season, including a 99-yard touchdown reception.
After graduating in 2002, Brent took his talent to Southern Illinois University. He became the second most prolific receiver in school history. He led the Salukis in receptions for three straight seasons.
In 2006, Brent began his NFL career. He played for the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs and the Minnesota Vikings. He was inducted into the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.
Brent Little’s Hall of Fame plaque and jersey is on display in the Poplar Bluff Museum.
The museum is handicap accessible and open free of charge 1-4 p.m. Sunday at 1010 Main St. Tell them Mike sent you.
Mike Shane is a veteran, Poplar Bluff resident and board member for the Poplar Bluff Museum.
