Get Active for the Summer
It’s the summertime and there’s nothing I want to see more than people stepping outside of their homes and getting outdoors.
For the next few months, I encourage everyone in Butler County to get active.
I’ve never been big on fitness or an advocate for health, but I wanted my first column to be encouraging, and with my expertise in sports, getting active for the summer seemed like a great idea.
Since arriving in Poplar Bluff a few months ago, I decided to join a gym for the third time in my life. I found a consistent schedule of attending at least three times a week, and I can already see a change in my body and mind.
My stress is down, my mind is clear and I'm sleeping much better than when I first arrived. I never knew that a few minutes of walking or 15 minutes in the gym could help ease the stressors of everyday life.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), staying active can improve brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles and improve your ability to do everyday activities.
It’s just as simple as taking a walk in the park, going on a bike ride or tending to a garden that can turn a stressful day into a good one. If you’re new to the city like me, I’ve already had some pretty good walks at Mclane Park.
Although it’s important for us adults to stay active, I believe our younger generation could also use some encouragement.
As a father of two, seeing my children outside all summer would be a dream of mine, but I know a lot has changed since I was younger. My mother couldn’t keep me in the house when school was out. I would stay out from the crack of dawn until the street lights came on.
Today, I have children who would rather watch others play online than go outdoors, which is quite bizarre. I’m not anti-technology, but I am in favor of taking a break. With that being said, I encourage the teens to put their phones down, go to the movies and make new friends.
To the parents, encourage your children to go outside and explore. Include a time for arts and crafts or find a sport the whole family can enjoy.
In my short time living here, I’ve noticed the many activities provided by the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation. There is an abundance of sports and family activities that everyone can enjoy, and I’m excited to get my family involved.
I'm not suggesting that you join a gym or change your diet. I'm only encouraging us all to step outside our homes and have some fun while being active.
COVID has kept us all inside long enough. It’s time to get outside and enjoy the sun. I hope to see you out there.
